European liner operators apply new surcharges from Asia to Africa

Three of the major ocean carriers have announced new peak season surcharges (PSS) for shipments from Asia to several ports in Africa.

First of all, Danish container line Maersk will apply the following PSS for dry and reefer containers from China to Kenya and Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, effective from 20 May.

Additionally, Maersk will implement another PSS from Far East Asia to West Africa for all containers on 1 June, as follows:

Furthermore, French liner operator CMA CGM has announced new peak season surcharges from Asia to Maldives and East Africa, effective from 15 and 20 May respectively, for dry, reefer, out of gauge and breakbulk cargo.

The surcharge from the Far East (North, Central, South China & Hong Kong SAR, North East Asia & South East Asia) to the Maldives will amount to US$300 per TEU.

The surcharge from the Far East (China – Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan area, Macau SAR) to Kenya, Tanzania (Dar Es Salaam) and South Africa will be US$1,000 per TEU / US$2,000 per FEU, while the surcharge from the same origin ports to Mozambique will be US$500 per TEU / US$1,000 per FEU.

Moreover, German container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd will introduce a new PSS of US$1,000 per TEU from Asia to the following destinations, effective from 1 June.

Destinations: Mombasa (Kenya), Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania), Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, Micronesia, New Caledonia, New Zealand, French Polynesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu, Wallis, Futuna Island, Dakar (Senegal), Nouakchott (Mauritania), Banjul (Gambia), Conakry (Guinea), Freetown (Sierra Leone), Monrovia (Liberia), Apapa & Tincan (Nigeria), Tema (Ghana), Cotonou (Benin), Abidjan & San Pedro (Ivory Coast), Luanda, Lobito, Namibe, Cabina, Soyo (Angola), Pointe Noire & Brazzaville (Congo), Matadi & Boma (Ghana), Libreville & Port Gentil (Gabon), Kribi & Douala (Cameroon), Bata & Malabo (Eq.Guinea) and Walvis Bay (Namibia).
