Ever Given docks in Qingdao for repairs until late October

The famous 20,000TEU container ship, Ever Given, which blocked the Suez Canal for around a week in March disrupting the global supply chain, has reached east China’s coastal city of Qingdao, docking at a port’s yard on Monday, 4 October.

The vessel, which was mainly damaged in the bow, will undergo repairs for more than 20 days in a shipyard of Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd and it is expected to restart operations in late October.

Authorities handled the ship’s entry approval procedures and dispatched patrol boats to organise maritime traffic for its smooth berthing, said Zhang Zhigang, an official with the Qingdao Maritime Safety Administration, according to local media.

The Ever Given, owned by Japan’s Shoei Kisen Kaisha and operated by Taiwan’s Evergreen Marine Corp., ran aground in the Suez Canal on 23 March and jammed global shipping traffic until it was refloated on 29 March with the help of more than 10 tugboats.

After negotiations between the vessel’s owners, insurers and Suez Canal authorities, the giant boxship departed Egypt early in July, more than 100 days after the accident, sailing to the European hubs in Rotterdam and Felixstowe.
