Fire breaks out again in Chittagong’s BM Container Depot

A fire broke out at the BM Container Depot in Chittagong on Tuesday (13 December) afternoon at a jute godown. A huge volume of jute was kept there for exporting abroad.

Three fire fighting units had to work nearly one and a half hours to douse the fire. Also, the depot’s own fire fighting unit worked to extinguish the fire.

Firefighting personnel is now working to find out the reasons behind the fire and the loss incurred. Police have also joined the firefighters to keep the situation calm.

A depot official claimed that the fire was not a serious incident. However, he could not assess the losses incurred immediately.

On 4 June 2022, a fire broke out at the BM Depot where chemical blasts caused the death of 49 people and injured hundreds.

After that, the operation at the depot remained suspended for nearly four months which was recently given permission to handle export and import containers.

In the meantime, the depot authorities carried out the required reform works and met the conditions set by the firefighting and port authorities to make it safer.
