First LNG-powered boxship arrives on Saudi Arabia’s east coast

CMA CGM Symi arrived at King Abdulaziz Port in Saudi Arabia, making the Dammam-based port the first on the country’s East Coast to receive a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-powered container vessel.

CMA CGM Symi, with a capacity of 15,400 TEUs, length of 366 metres, width of 51 metres and depth of 16 metres, has been powered by sustainable energy since entering service in 2022.

The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) said the Saudi port sector is well-positioned to boost global supply chains and lead a sustainable future across the shipping landscape, in line with the ambitions of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy (NTLS) and the Saudi Green Initiative, which pledges to reduce 278 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually by 2030.

Furthermore, LNG-powered ships are not unfamiliar to Saudi coasts, with the mega container vessel CMA CGM Jacques Saade docking at Jeddah Islamic Port in 2021. The world’s largest LNG-powered container ship has a capacity of 23,000 TEUs, a length of 400 metres, and a width of 61 metres.
