Fundación Valenciaport’s study advances ammonia as ship fuel

Fundación Valenciaport has initiated a study titled ‘Investigating the Safety of Ammonia as Fuel on Ships’ aiming to establish the foundations for utilizing ammonia as a ship fuel.

The study will encompass methodologies, safety assessments, and reliability analyses, along with the development of technical guidance to promote standardization within the port logistics sector.

Specifically, the project will focus on characterizing ammonia as both a chemical and fuel, evaluating existing standards, regulations, and practices, and addressing safety considerations for ships using ammonia fuel.

Moreover, it will conduct safety assessments and reliability analyses for selected equipment and systems, evaluate the safety of a generic ship design and two specific ship types, and develop target-based guidelines for ammonia-fueled ships.

Coordinated by ABS HELLENIC S.M., the project, with a budget of approximately US$490,000 is co-financed by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and is scheduled to run until June 2025.

Leveraging its expertise from projects like H2PORTS and POSEIDON, which involve hydrogen and e-methanol as fuels respectively, Fundación Valenciaport will contribute its experience from handling ammonia cargo at the Port of Sagunto. The Foundation will lead the ammonia characterization efforts, participate in risk analysis tasks, and contribute to guideline development alongside ABS Hellenic.

In addition to Fundación Valenciaport and ABS Hellenic, the project will involve collaboration with the Greek National Technical University of Athens
