Gdansk US$1.58 billion modernisation project to reach 2021 milestones

Development at the Port of Gdansk, which is aiming to become the hub port for Central and Eastern Europe will reach important milestones this year with the completion of a series of projects that will increase the availability and connectivity at the Baltic facility.

[s2If is_user_logged_in()]With a hinterland that includes Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Ukraine and Belarus as well as Scandinavia, which includes a population of 120 million people. Gdansk is developing its container terminals in both the inner and outer ports as well as its road and rail links to make the port more accessible for larger vessels and a greater number of containers.

An important investment due to complete in mid-2021 is the €163million (US$198.11 million) extension of the road and rail network to the Outer Port.

Port of Gdansk President Łukasz Greinke said “This investment will streamline transport into and out of the port,” he said. “In total it will see 7.2km of roads, 10km of new rail tracks and seven engineering structures built or rebuilt.”

In addition, the port will develop its communication systems, expand the access to the Deepwater Container Terminal (DCT) Gdansk, and reconstruct roads around the North Port with the construction of a parking area for trucks.

A further €125 million (US$152 million) will see the development of the inner port area as a transhipment hub for cargo, with a deepening of the access channel to allow for larger vessels to call at the Inner Port terminals with the modernisation of quay and terminal operations.

Port of Gdansk President Łukasz Greinke

“After this investment, Dworzec Drzewny Quay will become a transhipment quay, enabling it to receive much larger ships bringing them right into the Inner Port,” he said. “Most of the dredging work on the fairway has already been completed. Currently, intensive work is underway on the reconstruction of the quays. A significant part of these tasks has already been performed or is in the decisive phase of implementation,” said Greinke of the €43 million (US$52.24 million) project which is also due to be completed later this year.

“This massive infrastructure programme sends a positive message to shipping lines, freight forwarders and businesses across our hinterland,” said Greinke, “The Port of Gdansk is investing, improving and growing. There is a passionate shared vision here to make Gdansk the ‘gateway to the Baltic’ and we are supported by a wide range of stakeholders from across Government as well as partner businesses and investors.”

Major shipping lines operating regular calls to Gdansk include the Ocean Alliance, 2M as well as offering short sea connections to key trading areas like Scandinavia and the UK with Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, COSCO.[/s2If]
