Georgia Ports Authority orders 12 RTGs for the Port of Savannah

Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has ordered 12 Konecranes rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes for the Port of Savannah, which will now have a fleet of 234 Konecranes RTGs in operation.

The order was placed in the third quarter of 2022 and the cranes will be delivered by the end of 2024.

GPA has seen significant growth, hitting an all-time monthly high of 528,300 TEU in July.

“Our expansion program is proceeding well, and this order for 12 Konecranes RTGs will support our productivity and continuing growth. Konecranes is our go-to partner for container handling equipment and has been for over 25 years,” said GPA executive director Griff Lynch.

On-demand RTGs are diesel-electric machines with built-in readiness for electric operation via cable reels. They are a high-performance 16-wheel RTG with a 40-ton lift capacity, 1-over-5 stacking height and 6-plus-lane-width stacking width. They will be equipped with Konecranes’ Active Load Control system, which prevents the container from swaying.

At the same time, the auto-steering function is included, which keeps the cranes on a pre-programmed, straight driving path. In addition, they will have a TRUCONNECT® remote monitoring system from Konecranes.

“The Port of Savannah and Konecranes have been growing together in a mutually beneficial relationship, which continues with this RTG delivery,” noted Jussi Suhonen, Konecranes vice president.
