The Global Ports operated Petrolesport (PLP) terminal and the Russian digital services provider Rostelecom have put into operation a base station at the terminal to ensure full coverage with a service data transfer network across PLP’s handling complex.
The deployment of the new infrastructure has created a “secure and high-speed data transfer network” to support PLP operational service’s use of mobile devices, according to a statement.
In addition, the base station equipment which was installed at a height of 35 meters, enables uninterrupted operation of mobile devices throughout the Saint Petersburg port’s terminal.
“Hundreds of mobile devices are simultaneously involved in operations at the terminal,” stated the Chief information officer (CIO) of Global Ports, Alexey Ermolin, who added that the configuration of the communication signal coverage changes depending on the distribution of containers and other cargo throughout the territory, which complicates the operation of Wi-Fi networks.
Moreover, according to Ermolin, the launch of the new base station together with Rostelecom will enable Global Ports to partially phase out the use of Wi-Fi and provide extended stable communications coverage across Petrolesport.
“These measures will therefore increase the speed up and convenience of accounting for cargo when handling vessels and vehicles and carrying out yard operations,” he said.
