GSBN and DNV collaborate on verified data sharing

Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN), an independent non-profit technology consortium, has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the DNV classification society.

By facilitating the reliable sharing of verified data for green claims, the partnership hopes to boost decarbonisation and speed up the use of alternative fuels.

“To achieve shipping decarbonisation at scale, it needs to have a robust data foundation of verified data to enable trusted data sharing across the fragmented and complex supply chain. GSBN’s network of shipping members and its blockchain infrastructure are ideally positioned for this use case,” stated Bertrand Chen, CEO at GSBN.

The advent of alternative fuels and energy sources, as well as technological innovation, are expected to play a critical role in accomplishing the IMO’s strengthened GHG Strategy.

Bertrand Chen added, “By partnering with DNV, users of the platform can share verified data for vessel operations (can be shared) granularly with end customers to support decision-making and prove claims of sustainable shipping.”

According to the partnership, in order to do this, it is necessary to precisely measure and track emissions reduction data across the supply chain, as well as to guarantee that green claims on environmental performance are trustworthy, comparable, and verifiable.

DNV has introduced Emissions Connect, an emissions data verification engine, as a significant step toward allowing operational data verification.

Furthermore, DNV and GSBN will work under the terms of the MoU to perform pilots with its current shipping line members to integrate verified shipment data from DNV, with the goal of providing reliable and responsible green claims to end users backed by real granular data.
