In Hamburg, 66 young men and women are beginning their training with Hapag-Lloyd. Among them, 14 will train as ship mechanics, while 18 will become assistant officers, with roles split between 14 nautical, three technical, and one electronic.
Additionally, 17 trainees will pursue shore-based careers, such as shipping agents. Hapag-Lloyd is also welcoming 17 dual work-study students who will earn bachelor’s degrees from either the Hamburg School of Business Administration or the Nordakademie University of Applied Sciences.
Earlier this year, 14 new ship mechanics commenced their training and completed their first three-month voyage aboard the “Chicago Express” in mid-July. This 8,600 TEU vessel, one of Hapag-Lloyd’s two training ships, operates routes from Southern Europe to the US East Coast.
This type of group voyage is unique in Germany and is a key part of Hapag-Lloyd’s maritime training. Starting in spring 2025, these trainees will undertake ocean-going voyages in pairs on one of Hapag-Lloyd’s 280 ships.
“We are excited to welcome a new generation of maritime logistics talent and seafarers to Hapag-Lloyd. We are proud to support young people in their career paths in maritime logistics. Our diverse training programmes offer a range of perspectives, whether in the office, in the technical field or on the high seas, and provide a pathway into an exciting, global industry,” stated Donya-Florence Amer, chief information and human resources officer.
With twelve distinct training programs for both land and sea professions, Hapag-Lloyd stands as Germany’s largest maritime training company. The company’s training provides a solid foundation for successful careers in seafaring. Graduates of Hapag-Lloyd’s apprenticeships have excellent prospects for continued employment, as the majority are offered positions with the company upon completing their training.
