Hapag-Lloyd is the first shipping company in the world to equip all of its standard containers with real-time tracking devices and will be able to monitor its boxes and collect data to enhance transparency.
The German carrier announced the installation of live trackers on all its containers at the end of this month. Once the devices are permanently installed in the containers, they will be able to transmit data in real time and thus make supply chains more transparent and efficient.
Some of the data will provide GPS-based location, temperature and any sudden vibrations of the box.
In the coming weeks, the company will start to equip its container fleet with devices from technology company Nexxiot AG and with devices from the Internet of Things (IoT) solutions provider ORBCOMM.
“Our vision is to build the smartest container fleet in the world and provide our customers with valuable information at the frequency they need,” pointed out Olaf Habert, Hapag-Lloyd’s director of container applications.
The mass installation of monitoring devices in warehouses will begin at the end of this month. Hapag-Lloyd’s LIVE product will be available for standard container customers in early 2023. Then, by the end of 2023, it will be able to track its entire dry container fleet.
With the new technology, the company said it will be able to gain visibility, identify delays earlier, automatically notify customers who may have been affected, and initiate appropriate countermeasures.
