Hapag-Lloyd vessel encounters discharge difficulties at Jeddah

Hapag-Lloyd has announced that its 13,000TEU container ship, Hong Kong Express, was involved in an incident during discharge operations at the port of Jeddah on 2 June, which led to damage to the vessel and a number of containers.

A Hapag-Lloyd spokeswoman explained that two containers fell off a crane speader and damaged some additional containers aboard. In addition, she confirmed to Container News that no-one was injured in the accident neither was there any environmental damage

The German carrier stated that the terminal had successfully discharged all damaged containers and it added it “will make contact separately with the affected customers including operational contingency plans and updated schedules.”

The 2013-built container vessel continued on its scheduled rotation on 8 June and according to Marine Traffic, it is currently located in the Red Sea, sailing towards the Suez Canal.

The next port according to Indian Ocean Service (IOS) rotation, in which Hong Kong Express is deployed, is Tangier Port in Morocco.
