HMM and Hellmann cooperate to reduce Scope 3 emissions

HMM has collaborated with Hellmann Worldwide Logistics to manage Scope 3 emissions by implementing the Green Sailing Service, a low-carbon transportation solution aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

This initiative empowers the decrease of carbon footprint and tackles Scope 3 emissions with efficiency. The methodology behind this service is guided by PwC Korea.

“We are delighted to experience one of the finest examples of successful cooperation between industries making meaningful progress toward a net-zero future. Together with Hellmann, we will continue to develop mutually beneficial relationships and, at the same time, welcome anyone with whom we can share the ambitions for environmental initiatives and find a way to go green,” commented Shin Kim, Chief Container Business Officer (CCO) of HMM.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Scope 3 emissions are the result of activities from assets not owned or controlled by the reporting organization, but that the organization indirectly affects in its value chain.

Utilizing second-generation marine biofuel, composed of 30% biodiesel UCOME (Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester) derived from non-food biomass and 70% high-sulfur fuel oil (HSFO), HMM has implemented the Green Sailing Service.

The carbon emissions saved through the use of marine biofuel are attributed to Hellmann for reducing Scope 3 emissions in maritime transport. HMM currently employs biofuels on specific vessels to minimize carbon emissions throughout their lifecycle (from Well to Wake).

Furthermore, alternative fuels such as LNG and methanol are anticipated to become available in the latter half of this year or early next year. Additionally, HMM will issue a ‘Green Sailing Service Declaration,’ detailing the carbon reduction and alternative fuel usage based on relevant documents. Third-party certification will also be provided in the near term.

“As a sector with a substantial impact on global CO2 emissions, we carry a significant responsibility to foster greener logistics. Through our collaboration with HMM and active involvement in the Green Sailing Service program, Hellmann is reaffirming its commitment to sustainable practices in the sea freight industry,” said Jens Wollesen, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Hellmann Worldwide Logistics.
