HMM returns to US East Coast after three-year hiatus

The 13,154TEU container ship, Hyundai Hope, marked the return of HMM to the US east coast after three years, when the vessel called at Global Containers Terminals (GCT).

Hyundai Hope’s call at GCT Bayonne on 16 May, as part of THE Alliance’s (THEA’s) EC2 service, brought the first large vessel call by THEA to the terminal.

“While HMM has continued to support business on the US East Coast, we were not operating our vessels until now. This changes with the arrival of the Hyundai Hope at GCT Bayonne,” commented Jay Y. Lee, chairman and CEO of HMM (America) Inc.

This service will now call at GCT Bayonne weekly with vessel sizes of 13,000 plus TEU. With the EC2 upgrade, GCT Bayonne now accommodates three calls per week of vessels over 13,000 and 14,000TEU.

The EC2 service provides coverage between Asia and the US East Coast markets via the expanded Panama Canal. While the ships on the EC2 service are among the most modern and largest fleets serving the US East Coast, the addition of the HMM vessels will help deliver increased efficiency and quality while reducing emissions, according to GCT.
