IBIA and BIMCO launch decarbonization cooperation

International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) and Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly tackle challenges and opportunities in the bunker, marine energy, and maritime sectors, aiming to support the shipping industry decarbonization efforts.

“This partnership between IBIA and BIMCO marks an important step towards addressing the pressing challenge of decarbonisation in the shipping industry. The collaboration underscores the industry’s collective commitment to navigating towards a greener future for maritime operations,” stated Alexander Prokopakis, Executive Director of IBIA.

Under this agreement, both parties will combine their expertise and resources to develop innovative solutions and initiatives promoting the adoption of cleaner fuels and sustainable shipping practices. The focus of this partnership MOU will be on the following key areas:

1. Research and Development: Collaborating on relevant research initiatives, studies, and projects within the bunker/marine energy industry and maritime sector.
2. Information Sharing: Exchanging relevant information, publications, and data beneficial to the members of both organizations.
3. Training and Education: Exploring joint opportunities for training programs, seminars, and educational initiatives aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of professionals in the maritime and bunker/marine energy sectors.
4. Advocacy: Collaborating on efforts to address common issues and challenges encountered by the industry.

“As we work towards the checkpoints and targets of the updated GHG strategy of the IMO, working across all sectors that influence and support the decarbonisation of shipping will be key. Our ships will be relying on many different fuel solutions in the process and working toward the safety and availability of those is crucial,” commented David Loosley, BIMCO Secretary General & CEO.
