The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council elected Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco of the Republic of Panama as the new Secretary-General for the next four years.
Valesco’s term will begin on 1 January 2024, after the termination of the contract of the current Secretary-General, Kitack Lim on 31 December 2023.
The decision was made during the 129th session of the IMO Council, which is taking place from 17 to 21 July.
The new IMO secretary-general will face responsibility for driving the sector forward, especially given the new objectives adopted under the 2023 Strategy for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Shipping a little over a week ago.
