Impala acquires HES Hartel Tank Terminal in Rotterdam

Following an auction process, Impala Terminals Group, a multinational infrastructure and logistics firm, has agreed to buy HES Hartel Tank Terminal at the port of Rotterdam.

Impala will provide an additional investment of around €90-100 million over the next two years to complete the terminal’s construction, while the transaction is expected to be completed in the next days.

The HES Hartel Tank Terminal in the Maasvlakte area, which will be renamed “Impala Energy Infrastructure Netherlands,” has 1.3 million cubic meters of bulk liquid energy product storage capacity.

It will include over 50 tanks, berths capable of loading VLCC-sized vessels, and nine barge jetties. The terminal’s high-grade specifications and connection will give maximum flexibility to facility users. Importantly, the terminal has the potential to store a range of biofuel goods, which will aid in the region’s energy transformation.

Construction of this brand-new storage and distribution terminal was put on hold in December 2022 following several setbacks, including the Covid-19 pandemic, other delays and additional costs. The project owner, HES Hartel Tank Terminal B.V. was declared insolvent in January this year and an auction process followed.

“We are pleased that Impala has purchased the terminal asset and that construction work will be completed. With this transaction, the company is making a lasting commitment to the port and is adding a brand-new facility for storing a wide range of bulk liquid energy products. This provides a new future for the terminal after a bankruptcy that has been difficult for all parties concerned, particularly the employees,” stated Boudewijn Siemons, interim CEO and COO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority.
