India achieves slight container volumes increase

The combined volume of containerised shipments processed at India’s 12 state-run ports in the fiscal year 2019 (April 2019-March 2020) increased slightly, despite the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Covid-19 caused a significant slowdown in the growth of world trade and consequently decreased the size of the potential growth of Indian ports in the fiscal year.

In terms of tonnage, the 12 ports swelled 1% to 146.93 million tonnes, while container volumes increased 1.1% to 9.988 million TEU.

  • Jawaharlal Nehru Port ↓2% – 5.031 million TEU
  • Chennai Port ↓14.6% – 1.384 million TEU
  • Kolkata Port ↑1.7% – 844,000TEU
  • Chidambaranar Port ↑8.8%– 804,000TEU
  • Cochin Port ↑4.2%– 620,000TEU
  • Visakhapatnam Port ↑12%– 504,000TEU
  • Deendayal Port ↑82.8% – 446,000TEU
  • New Mangalore Port ↑15.9% -153,000TEU
  • Kamarajar Port (Ennore Port) ↑129.8%– 131,000TEU
  • Mormugao Port ↓13.5% – 32,000TEU
  • Mumbai Port ↔stable – 27,000TEU
  • Paradip Port 7.7% – 12,000TEU
