Indonesian domestic liner operator PT Salam Pacific Indonesia Lines (SPIL) has tied up with compatriot e-commerce company Tokopedia to enable customers to use the latter’s app to make e-payments.
The collaboration enables shippers to pay for SPIL’s delivery orders via the Tokopedia application. SPIL’s general manager Jimmy Liesensia said this co-operation facilitates business development through digital technologies.
SPIL has been encouraging digitalisation in the shipping industry in Indonesia by launching a digital platform, mySPIL in 2017, enabling shippers to check the status of their cargoes.
Liesensia said, “Tokopedia is one of the most used applications in Indonesia and is accessed by more than 90 million users every month. According to our customer survey, almost all of them have the Tokopedia app on their smartphones. With this co-operation, our customers have an alternative method to settle payment for SPIL’s delivery orders, and the Tokopedia app makes payment settlement faster and more convenient.”
Users can make payments through debit/credit cards or transferring funds from their bank accounts.
Tokopedia’s project manager Veranica (who goes by one name) said, “We’re very enthusiastic about the collaboration, as it’s the first time that a shipping company is working with an e-commerce company in Indonesia.”
Classified as a unicorn, a privately held company with a valuation of over US$1 billion, Tokopedia plans an initial public offering by 2023 in Indonesia and the US, according to a recent report in the Nikkei Asian Review.
Tokopedia has received backing from Japanese telecommunications group Softbank and the Singapore government’s investment company, Temasek Holdings.
