Indonesia’s transport minister Budi Karya Sumadi said that Patimban Port’s new US$3 billion container terminal, which is now under construction, is expected to be operational before 2027.
[s2If is_user_logged_in()]Patimban is located 145km east of Jakarta and will become Indonesia’s largest port when fully completed in, eclipsing Tanjung Priok port in the capital city. Patimban will complement Kertajati International Airport, around 25km south of the port, which opened in May 2018.
The first phase of Patimban’s container terminal will have an annual capacity of 7.5 million TEU and a subsequent phase can expand capacity to 14 million TEU. With a 16m depth, Patimban can accommodate neo-Panamax container ships.
Speaking to the press through a video called “The Modern Face of My Country’s Ports”, Budi said, “I am convinced that if the ports of Patimban and Tanjung Priok co-operate, we will outperform Shanghai and reach the same level as Singapore. This is a country that intends to turn Patimban into a port that makes people proud and has good economic value. In other words, the Port of Badingban will become a world connecting port.”
Budi said he hopes that Patimban port can spur the growth of goods and services and logistics flows to and from the Cirebon port agglomeration area, Karawang Industrial Zone, Shuangmutan, and Majalenka, and the highway connecting Jakarta.
Karawang Industrial Zone is a joint venture between Indonesian conglomerate Sinar Mas and Japanese trading group Itochu Corporation. The presence of many Japanese car makers in this industrial estate is expected to lead to cargo growth for Patimban.[/s2If]
