A Singapore owned vessel, the Interasia Catalyst, has reported a container fire that started on 4 April in a number of containers on deck, with the captain sending a distress call at around 01:00, local time, shortly after the ship had left Port Klang, Malaysia.
The 2009-built vessel, which has a capacity of 4,200TEU, was en route to Cochin, India, when the fire was reported. Local reports said the captain sent a request to return to Port Klang.

[s2If is_user_logged_in()]The reports said the “Captain sent a distress signal that there was smoke coming from the containers on board and requested to go back to the Port [Klang]. The vessel safely arrived at the Port at about 07:00hrs on 5 April, port authorities then co-ordinated with the crew to extinguish the fire.”
Reports suggest that about a dozen containers were burning when the vessel arrived at Port Klang and that firefighters and crew had worked to contain the fire.
Latest reports from the Interasia Catalyst fire are that at least three containers are reported to be stuffed with sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate and wooden furniture, yarn, plastics and industrial products are reported to be stowed in other containers close to the blaze.
