Tapping into the consistent shortage of containers, the Government of India and DG Shipping has authorised class society the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), to certify containers manufactured in India.
Class has developed a new service to provide certification of marine containers which will be in tandem with the International Maritime Organization’s International Convention for Safe Containers.
[s2If is_user_logged_in()]The IRS has released its guidelines on the Certification of Containers which were developed by the Rule Development and Associated Research Team at the class society. The process will include review and approval of container design, assessment of production facilities, prototype testing, inspection and testing during production and certification.
Divisional head at IRS, TK Sahu said, “This will guide local manufacturers to produce containers in compliance with the international requirements.” He added that IRS support for Indian manufacturers will help them compete with international manufacturers matching their standards.
This development is in line with India’s Maritime India Vision 2030, that will transform the country’s maritime sector in the coming decade. India envisages developing capacity at ports and a container manufacturing hub at the strategically located areas of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Odisha-West Bengal cluster.
