January rail volume rises at Port of New York & New Jersey

Rail volume surged in January at the Port of New York and New Jersey, setting an all-time monthly record, according to Port of New York and New Jersey. January’s rail volume increased by 12.3% from the previous year’s figure, totaling 61,415 containers.

After a record-setting year in 2019 for cargo and passenger volume, the Port of New York and New Jersey wrapped up the first month of 2020 with steady total volume numbers. Total volume for January included 617,024TEU (349,196 lifts), a 0.9% decrease from the previous year’s 622,531TEU (355,374 lifts).

Imports in January totalled 324,644TEU (183,697 lifts) versus 328,361TEU (187,406 lifts) in January 2019, a 1.1% decrease. Total exports (TEU) decreased by 0.6% in January 2020 compared to January 2019. January numbers totaled 292,380TEU (165,499 lifts) while January 2019 posted 294,170TEU (167,968 lifts).

Autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey totaled 38,109 in January, a decrease of 13.6% when compared to January 2019.
