Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), one of India’s premier container ports, has marked a significant increase in container throughput during the first half of the financial year (FY) 2021-22, which began in April 2021 and will end in March 2022.
In particular, during this period, the Port of Nhava Sheva handled more than 2.7 million TEU, reflecting a rise of 40.4% in box volumes, compared to the corresponding period of last year.
Additionally, during the first half of FY2021-22 rail volumes also saw year-on-year growth of more than 18%.
As for September alone, JNPT handled 452,108TEU, recording a traffic increase of almost 19% over the same month of 2020.
During the same month, Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal (NSIGT) saw its busiest month ever, reaching 100,814TEU.
Additionally, JNPT has made developments in technology and infrastructures, according to Shri Sanjay Sethi, an officer of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Chairman at JNPT, who said that the Indian port “has been undertaking various measures to ensure the port is at par with technologically advanced global ports.”
JNPT Chairman announced the installation of two mobile x-ray scanners at Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT) and APM Terminals, “that will give the security agencies an advantage of taking appropriate action before the container exit.”
Furthermore, the newly constructed coastal berth will provide better infrastructure for coastal shipping and decongest rail and road networks, improving the effective multi-modal transportation solutions, according to JNPT.
