K Line to build electric tugboat powered by battery

K Line will build through its group company, SEAGATE (SGC), a new electric tugboat that will be powered by a battery.

The new tugboat is equipped with a propulsion system that works with the “Hybrid EV system”. It has an electric motor as the main power source that runs on a large capacity lithium-ion battery charged by a shore charger. In addition, it is equipped with a generator as the auxiliary power source.t

This is the first tugboat that has an electric engine as the main source of energy in Tokuyama (Japan).

It will be deployed in the first half of 2025 and is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the region.

In fact, in the future, it will be possible to achieve zero emissions by replacing the fuel for the generator with zero emission energy, according to the company.

Last November, K Line revised a part of its long-term environmental guideline “K LINE Environmental Vision 2050” and set a new goal for 2050 as “The challenge of Achieving Net-Zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.”
