Kalmar seals eco-equipment deals in Europe and S. America

Kalmar has announced two new agreements to provide new equipment to Obrnice intermodal terminal in the Czech Republic and Brazilian logistics operator Sagres.

The Finnish manufacturer has concluded a deal with the Czech transportation company Upline to supply a diesel-electric Kalmar rubber-tyred gantry crane (RTG) equipped with the Kalmar SmartRail process automation solution for its Obrnice intermodal terminal.

The unit delivered to Upline will be fitted with the Kalmar SmartRail automated gantry steering solution, which increases the safety and efficiency of RTG operations and improves visibility for operators with real-time information on rail, gantry position and system status. In addition to handling containers, the crane will also be capable of handling trailers and swap bodies with foldable grapple arms mounted on the spreader, and rotating the loads as needed, according to an announcement.

The Kalmar RTG combines diesel and electric technology for fuel savings, low emissions and easy maintenance. Kalmar claims that at 1,000 hours, it has one of the longest maintenance intervals in the industry, and its modular design makes it easy to tailor to customer-specific requirements, while its fuel-efficient diesel engine complies with EU Stage V emissions standards.

In addition, the Cargotec-owned company will supply a further eight fully electric light forklift trucks to Sagres as part of an agreement concluded in January 2020, which includes an option for the purchase of a total of 16 electric forklifts during 2020 and 2021.

Sagres operates in the three main ports in the south of Brazil, Terminal Logístico Rio Grande (TLRG), Terminal Logístico Pelotas (TLP) and Terminal Logístico Guaíba (TLG), supporting the operations of Compañía Manufacturera de Papeles y Cartones (CMPC), the second-largest pulp and paper manufacturer in Latin America.

The new forklifts will be deployed at CMPC’s pulp and paper plant in the municipality of Guaíba, joining the four identical machines delivered at the start of 2020.

Kalmar and Sagres strengthen cooperation with new electric forklifts that will further enhance cost efficiency and environmental performance at Guaíba.

Kalmar light electric forklifts powered by lead-acid battery technology offer all the performance of a powerful diesel truck but without the emissions, noise or vibration, according to Kalmar, which added that “they feature a time-saving diagnostic system, easy maintenance and the ergonomically designed EGO cabin to provide a superior driving experience, with adjustable control panels, steering wheel and seat as well as exceptional visibility.”

“Kalmar’s electric forklift solutions have already proven their ability to enhance environmental performance, cost efficiency and workplace well-being at Guaíba. It was therefore a straightforward decision to exercise our option to purchase the additional machines,” stated Sagres technical director, Lucio Pires.

The Upline order was booked in Cargotec’s 2020 fourth quarter order intake with the delivery scheduled for one year later (2021 Q4), while Sagres’ order was booked in Cargotec’s 2020 third quarter order intake, with the delivery of the machines scheduled to take place during the fourth quarter of 2020 and the first of 2021.
