Cargotec-owned Kalmar has finalized a deal with Intermodal Terminal Company (ITC), an Australian operator, to provide six Kalmar Electric Reachstackers and two Kalmar Electric Empty Container Handlers.
These machines will be deployed at ITC’s upcoming Somerton Intermodal Terminal in Melbourne, Victoria, a multipurpose terminal currently under construction.
This contract, which also encompasses a comprehensive Kalmar Complete Care service agreement, was recorded in Cargotec’s order intake for the third quarter of 2023, while the delivery of the equipment is set to commence in the first quarter of 2025.
ITC is fully owned and backed by Aware Super, one of Australia’s prominent superannuation funds and aims to establish the Somerton Intermodal Terminal (SIT) as Australia’s largest intermodal facility, with a projected capacity to handle over one million TEUs annually.

ITC anticipates that the future SIT will significantly alleviate congestion on Melbourne’s streets, roads, and highways, removing the equivalent of 500,000 truck journeys each year and thereby reducing emissions in the national supply chain by an estimated 189,000 tonnes annually.
The Kalmar reach stackers and empty container handlers will operate on lithium-ion battery technology. Under the Kalmar Complete Care agreement, a dedicated Kalmar maintenance team and parts inventory will be located at the terminal to ensure 24/7 support for the equipment.
