Kalmar to enhance Réunion Island box terminal with hybrid equipment

Kalmar and CMA CGM’s subsidiary CMA Terminals have reached an agreement for the supply of three Kalmar hybrid straddle carriers to SAMR, a terminal located on Réunion Island.

The order was registered in the 2023 Q4 order intake of Cargoted, the mother company of Kalmar with the machines set to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Réunion Island, a French department in the Indian Ocean, now serves as the strategic hub for the CMA CGM Group within the Indian Ocean region. Port Réunion has consequently been developed to become France’s fourth-largest container port. Presently, CMA Terminal operates a significant number of Kalmar diesel-electric straddle carriers at its terminal within the port.

“Kalmar and CMA Terminals have a long and successful history of collaboration. We are proud that they have selected our proven hybrid straddle carrier solution – which can cut fuel consumption by up to 40% compared to equivalent diesel-powered machines – to support them with their transition to more eco-efficient cargo-handling operations,” stated Karri Keskinen, head of Global Sales, Horizontal Transportation, Kalmar.
