Kenya Port Authority (KPA) has confirmed two orders for new reachstackers and forklift trucks to the Finnish cargo handling equipment manufacturer and part of Cargotec, Kalmar, in order to enhance its fleet at Mombasa Container Terminal.
The first order comprising three forklift trucks was booked in Cargotec’s second quarter order intake, and the second one which includes eight reachstackers was booked in the company’s third quarter order intake. All of the machines are scheduled to be delivered during the first quarter of the next year.
The forklift truck order consists of two medium machines and one heavy machine, while the reachstacker order includes four Kalmar Gloria reachstackers and four reachstackers for empty and semi-laden container handling.
In several ports, there are additional machines, such as hydraulic press machines and bending machines among others, that support the port equipment.
KPA’s diverse equipment fleet includes Kalmar terminal tractors, forklift trucks, reachstackers and rubber-tyred gantry cranes. Previously the African Port had ordered from Kalmar four Kalmar Gloria reachstackers delivered in 2020 and a total of 50 Kalmar terminal tractors, delivered to KPA in 2019 and 2020, according to a statement.
The port authority manages and operates all scheduled seaports along Kenya’s coastline and the Port of Mombasa which is the gateway to eastern and central Africa and is one of the busiest ports in East Africa.
“We took delivery of our first Kalmar reachstacker in 2005, and it is still running flawlessly,” said Head of Terminal Engineering at KPA, Eng. Julius Tai, who went on to add that over the years Kalmar has always been willing to listen, adapt and provide the port authority with solutions that meet its requirements without compromising on capacity.
