Kuenz wins major contract for automated gantry cranes

Kuenz GmbH has secured a major contract from ÖBB to deliver five automatic gantry cranes with remote control stations to the TSA INFRA terminals in Vienna South, Wels, and Wolfurt by the end of 2027.

This project represents one of the largest intermodal business orders in Europe in recent years.

David Moosbrugger, CEO of Kuenz, mentioned: “This order underscores the extremely successful cooperation between ÖBB and Künz over the past decades. The cranes are of the highest technological standard, and we are extremely proud to have won this major order.”

Terminal Service Austria (TSA) is committed to increasing capacity, improving service, and driving growth at its terminals. This investment underscores a strong commitment to shifting freight transport from road to rail. Alongside the delivery of new cranes, the existing cranes at Wolfurt and Vienna South will be upgraded for automatic operation.

These cranes will feature advanced sensors capable of identifying containers and precisely positioning loads on trucks or wagons with millimetre accuracy. Furthermore, modern workspaces will be created for crane operators, enabling them to operate the cranes manually or semi-automatically via remote control stations. These innovative stations also open up employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

During the tender process, TSA INFRA opted for a total cost of ownership analysis, considering not only the initial investment but also ongoing operational costs. Kuenz successfully outperformed international competitors and secured the contract, which includes both the construction of the cranes and a maintenance agreement for the coming years.
