La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT), operated by Contship Italia Group, set a new record handling the 24,000 TEU container ship MSC Nicola Mastro on 9 August.
La Spezia Container Terminal became Italy’s first gateway to successfully operate one of the world’s largest container vessels, as MSC Nicola Mastro is the first boxship with a capacity of 24,000 TEUs to call in a country’s port.
The new vessel, which will be christened in Trieste, Italy next September, arrived at the LSCT in the early hours of Wednesday 9 August with operations beginning immediately at 7:00 a.m.
“The dimensions of this record-breaking ship far exceed those of all other ships typically calling at La Spezia Terminal. This achievement is the result of the terminal’s ability to perfectly address all operational needs and confirms the competitive factors of the ‘Spezia System’ that provides exceptional service for all vessels,” commented Contship Italia in a statement.
Matthieu Gasselin, CEO of Contship Italia, stated, “Our customers are evolving, and we are committed to supporting this change and their growth with infrastructure and value-added solutions. To stay competitive, it is crucial to anticipate market demands. The fact that Nicola Mastro chose the La Spezia Container Terminal gateway confirms our readiness for the future.”
