Liebherr Container Cranes announced its collaboration with Rijeka Gateway, providing the terminal with state-of-the-art remote-controlled yard cranes.
Under this significant initiative, Liebherr will deliver 15 electric rubber tyre gantry cranes (ERTGs) and two rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGs) to the terminal. These cutting-edge machines represent the forefront of technological innovation, enabling seamless remote operation and control.
As an innovative terminal, the remote operation of these cranes will transform container handling operations, enhancing safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Rijeka Gateway, located on Croatia’s North Adriatic coast, is a joint venture between APM Terminals (51%) and Enna Logic (49%).
Liebherr’s ERTGs utilize electric busbar technology with drive-in auto-connect functionality. By eliminating all hydraulics and incorporating the Liebherr Liduro Power Port, a mobile lithium-ion battery that powers cross-traveling between stacks, emission-free operation is ensured.
Additionally, the electric-powered RTGs are complemented by two advanced RMGs for intermodal handling at the terminal. This innovative solution guarantees completely emission-free operations at the port, showcasing Liebherr’s dedication to environmental sustainability.
“Sustainability is at the core of our solution. We understand the importance of environmentally responsible practices, and we strive to be a leader in sustainable supply chains. With our Liebherr solution, customers can not only achieve operational excellence but also contribute to a more sustainable future,” stated Declan O’Sullivan Liebherr’s general manager of sales.
Declan O’Sullivan firmly believes that through the embrace of advanced technology and sustainable practices, Liebherr has the potential to redefine the industry landscape and instigate positive transformation for future generations.
He said, “The partnership between Liebherr Container Cranes and Rijeka Gateway exemplifies the shared commitment to innovation and sustainability. By leveraging remote operations and advanced equipment, the terminal is establishing new benchmarks for operational efficiency, safety, and environmental responsibility in the Adriatic region.”
The Liebherr ERTGs and RMGs are equipped with dedicated Liebherr Remote Operator Stations (ROS), enabling crane control from the convenience of an office setting. This integration of cutting-edge technology not only enhances safety and productivity but also lays the groundwork for a potential future transition to fully automated operation.
Also, Liebherr’s advanced no-sway reeving and simultaneous motion of all drives come as standard features, ensuring that remote operators experience immediate benefits and high productivity from the outset. Additionally, the inclusion of scanners and safety features ensures secure and efficient operation.
Aligned with the terminal’s sustainability commitment, the adoption of remotely controlled cranes eliminates the necessity for operators to be physically present on the cranes, thereby reducing the risk of accidents and injuries.
