LNG-powered CMA CGM mega vessel completes milestone call at Rotterdam

The 23,000TEU CMA CGM Concorde arrived at Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) for its maiden call in the Port of Rotterdam on 1 July and two days later the major container terminal reached an important milestone.

On 3 July, RWG handled the 5 millionth deep-sea container since its official opening in September 2015. Box No. 5 million was offloaded from the CMA CGM Concorde, which is one of a series of nine LNG-powered Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs) owned by the French shipping group.

“We are very proud of having achieved this milestone in RWG’s short history. It is a team effort of RWG as a whole and thanks to the trust of all our customers, partners and stakeholders,” commented Ronald Lugthart, CEO of RWG.

The 400 metres long vessel has called RWG at the Port of Rotterdam as it is currently deployed on the NEU4 service of Ocean Alliance, which includes CMA CGM, COSCO, OOCL and Evergreen.

RWG is the first deep sea terminal to be “LNG ready” in the Netherlands, according to an announcement, and the CMA CGM Concorde’s call is a milestone in the transition towards a more carbon-neutral fuel for the shipping industry, according to the Dutch major terminal.
