Maersk Eindhoven, which suffered an engine failure in the Pacific Ocean, lost 260 containers overboard and now has turned back towards Asia, from near Japan, in order to sail to the nearest suitable port.
[s2If is_user_logged_in()]”After having experienced an engine stop in heavy seas near Japan in her crossing from Xiamen, China to Los Angeles, California on Maersk’s TP6 Asia/US West Coast-service, the vessel Maersk Eindhoven regrettably lost 260 containers overboard,” said Maersk.
“After restoring propulsion, the vessel has turned around and we are currently assessing the nearest suitable port option in Asia to berth the vessel,” the Copegaghen-based carrier stated in an update.
The Maersk Eindhoven is currently located near the Japan Coast, according to the global ship tracking system, MarineTraffic.
The preliminary findings indicate that an engine stop and loss of manoeuvring in rough seas led to severe rolling causing the accident, according to Maersk, which noted it is in the process of conducting an investigation of the incident.
This is the sixth reported case of containers lost in the largest ocean of the world in less than three months and the third in the space of 31 days. These incidents have caused approximately 3,000 boxes to be plunged to the floor of the Pacific Ocean.
