In yet another incident several hundred containers have been lost due to Maersk Eindhoven losing power near Japan on 17 February. The Neopanamax container ship was sailing from the port of Xiamen, China to the port of Los Angeles, US, when it faced an engine stop in heavy weather.
[s2If is_user_logged_in()]Although Maersk has confirmed that a number of boxes have been lost overboard, the exact number is yet unknown. “We are awaiting further updates from the vessel regarding potentially lost or damaged containers and will share the details once available,” said the Copegaghen-based line in its statement.
“We do not yet have the visibility into which of our customers’ containers have been lost or damaged,” added Maersk.
All crew members have been reported to be safe, according to the vessel operator, and the ship’s propulsion has been restored.
This incident comes one month after the Maersk Essen case, in which 750 containers were lost in the Pacific Ocean when the vessel was sailing in the same route of the same service as Maersk Eindhoven.
The 13,100TEU vessel was deployed on the TP6/Pearl service of the 2M Alliance, which consists of Maersk and MSC.
The Swiss-based company has also confirmed the incident involving the Maersk Eindhoven. “We have not yet been informed whether any MSC customer cargo was impacted,” said MSC in its announcement.
Maersk is currently assessing the nearest suitable port options in Asia to berth the 2010-built vessel.
The Danish company noted, “Our local customer experience teams will be reaching out to your organisation to inform you of further details. We will prioritise calling customers where containers may have been lost or sustained potential damage. We ask you to bear with us as we receive more details surrounding the status of the vessel and cargo.”
