Maersk Essen is expected to berth in the Port of Los Angeles on 5 March, according to one customer who has been notified by Maersk, following the vessel’s departure from the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico, after losing 760 containers in a Pacific storm in January.
[s2If is_user_logged_in()]According to reports 178 damaged containers were unloaded in Mexico, with around 50 of these boxes considered to be able to continue the journey.
According to marine claimant consultancy WK Webster, “The remainder will require the cargoes to be cross stuffed into sound containers prior to forwarding to destination.” The consultancy added that local reports suggest “That none of the 178 discharged containers were loaded back onboard the Maersk Essen before it sailed. To this end, we are liaising with Maersk and MSC regarding their intentions to ship these units to [their] destination.
Meanwhile, at least one cargo owner has complained that they remain unaware as to what has happened to their cargo. Audrey Ross Tweeted on 25 February, that Maersk Essen was “Currently at Port of Repair Lázaro Cárdenas Carrier advise vessel will sail Mexico 2/22, eta LAX 3/5 I still don’t know if my goods are lost / damaged / secure.”
The vessel lost 760 containers overboard, but the carrier did not want to show the vessel arriving in Mexico, forcing WK Webster to remove drone footage of the damaged vessel, which was later filmed as it arrived in Mexico.
