Maersk-operated 5,500 TEU vessel suffers power loss in Australia waters

The 5,500 TEU boxship Rio Madeira suffered an electrical power outage causing loss of propulsion on 20 October, while it was sailing to Sydney, Australia from the port of Singapore.

After the incident, the Singapore-flagged container vessel was towed into the port of Sydney and berthed at Sydney Hutchison terminal, where repairs were carried out on 23 October.

The ship, which had onboard 3,380 containers, was drifting in safe waters off Sydney pilot station, according to Maersk’s statement.

The Danish carrier said, “The vessel had power supply from the emergency generator; however, it was not sufficient to perform all functions which were required to sail the vessel.”

Maersk arranged tugboats to be alongside for safety and stability of the vessel while crew members were trouble shooting the issue.

The technicians have now rectified the issue and electricity onboard the vessel has been restored, according to the company’s statement.

Cargo operations will be planned at the Sydney DPW terminal with an estimated time of arrival on 27 October.
