A.P. Moller – Maersk has launched a new intermodal service in Bulgaria, connecting Burgas with Plovdiv, the second-largest city in the country, by rail, and Plovdiv with the capital Sofia by truck.
The rail transportation between the Bulgarian cities serves logistics in both directions, imports and exports, according to a statement, while daily truck shuttle will connect Plovdiv and Sofia.
“We have offered our customers not just changing from truck to rail but connecting rail to their supply chains in a way that presents additional value to their logistics and business,” noted the Managing Director for Europe and Middle East area at Maersk, Sedef Ayhan.
The Danish retail chain Jysk Bulgaria, and the packaging and paper company Mondi Paper are the first companies to collaborate with this new service in Bulgaria which increases free time at Plovdiv rail depot.
The new product is also expected to decrease CO2 emissions, according to an announcement.
This service is important for Jysk Bulgaria to increase supply chain resilience and agility through the current challenging times, according to Logistics Director of the company, Jaroslaw Sobczyk, who pointed out that “by including rail, we save 40 km from Burgas to Sofia.”
Sobczyk added, “The fact that the rail travels by night and gathers big lots helps us to get better transit times and overall, we reduce CO2 emissions in our supply chain, as rail freight produces 16 times less carbon pollution than road freights.”
