Maersk to build new storage facility for electric car batteries in Germany

For the storage and handling of electric vehicle batteries and the parts used to make the batteries, Maersk is constructing a 20,000m² logistics centre, close to Hanover in Germany with the assistance of the German project developer bauwo.

Following the successful launch of a similar facility in Teplice, Czech Republic, in November 2022, the two new halls in Berkhof, directly on the A7 motorway, will further strengthen Maersk’s position as a logistics partner in the automotive industry.

According to the Danish company, after the recently granted construction permit, the works on the approximately 50,000m² site near Hanover have already begun.

“Completing the highly automated battery warehouse is scheduled for May 2024 in just one year,” said Maersk.

“The logistics centre in Berkhof will be a central building block for transporting and temporarily storing the batteries as the most important element in e-mobility,” stated Jens-Ole Krenzien, managing director of North Europe Continent at Maersk.

In-depth quality checks, battery charging, and other value-adding services along automotive supply chains are just a few of the services provided in the specialised warehouse in addition to storage and repacking, according to Maersk’s statement.

The two halls have a clear height of twelve metres and can hold up to 34,000 pallets, while uncomplicated safety measures are in place to watch over the batteries.

For instance, in a situation of a greater temperature or size expansion, a pallet is completely mechanically evacuated and safely stowed outdoors in a unique container where it may be studied in more detail. If necessary, the warehouse can be modified to include distinct spaces designated for each customer.
