Major German container terminal operators suspend Russia services

The German container terminal operators Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) and Eurogate have announced the suspension of all container handling to and from Russia from 1 March, due to the continuing Putin’s war in Ukraine.

In addition to seaborne services, rail and truck sectors are also affected with HHLA’s rail subsidiary Metrans also discontinuing container transport from and to Russia.

Terminals in Hamburg handled 337,000 TEU in seaborne transport with the Russian Federation last year.

“The Port of Hamburg has hitherto been one of the most significant hubs for Russian imports and exports. There have so far been 13 liner services between the Port of Hamburg and the Russian ports of St Petersburg, Ust-Luga, Kaliningrad, Bronka, Murmansk and Archangel,” commented Axel Mattern, Joint CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing.

German operators follow similar decisions of the Canadian and UK ports, as well as the majority of the largest shipping lines.
