Major lines keep changing schedules amid Covid-19 demand crisis

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has announced that in order to adapt the capacity to current market demands amidst the evolving Covid-19 situation, it will temporarily suspend the NWC (Northwest Countries) to IPAK (India Pakistan) service, effective from week 20 until end of June.

Last sailing on NWC to IPAK will be:
Vessel APL New York, voyage OEG62E, ETA Southampton 4 May 2020

During this period, MSC will continue to offer Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Red Sea & East Africa with its Himalaya Express service. Whereas specific destinations shown below will be temporarily served with alternative routings and inducement calls by the Petra service:

  • Shipment to Djibouti on Himalaya Express via King Abdullah and continue with Petra
  • Shipment to Port Qasim on Himalaya Express via King Abdullah and continue Petra
  • Shipment to Hazıra on Himalaya Express via Mundra and continue with Ingwe

In addition, Hapag-Lloyd has announced void sailing positions of Atlantic Loop 6 (AL6) in week 19 due to Covid-19 related measures in several countries, “resulting in operational challenges and unusually decreasing demand.”

The German shipping carrier will also implement the following service changes on the Indian Subcontinent/Middle East – North America services for the upcoming weeks:

The following service options can be offered:

Export alternative out of ISC and Middle East

a) PS3 service to Colombo for connection to EC5 for USEC.
b) IMX service to Barcelona for connection to next available AL6 service to USEC.
c) IOS service to North Europe for connection to Atlantic services.
d) Charleston cargo to connect via AL6 or to be rolled to next available TPI sailing.

Export alternative out of North America:

a) USEC to ISC / Middle East – EC5
b) USEC to ISC/Middle East – Next available PS3 vessel

Moreover, the Detroit Express (038W17 / 039E20) sailing on Hapag-Lloyd’s MCA Service will have a void sailing, due to lack of cargo caused by pandemic crisis.

The Hamburg-based firm offers the following alternatives for the void sailing on MCA.

Shipments to Montreal /US-Midwest can be routed alternatively via:
– AL6 via New York
– AL7 via Halifax

Furthermore, Maersk will be taking out one vessel from the MMX service rotation – which will not be replaced and result in blanking the MMX every 5 weeks, starting as of week 16 outbound Mediterranean till week 36 outbound Mediterranean for now.

The services are expected to resume subject to improved market demand, said the Danish company. Maersk will continue to review the demand picture and will continuously adjust deployed capacity to match.
