Malta Freeport launches terminal expansion

Malta Freeport Terminals has reached a historic deal with the government to commence its first terminal expansion in two decades.

The extension of Malta Freeport will strengthen the facility’s position as a premier transshipment centre while also benefiting the local economy and the environment, according to a statement.

The project is expected to lengthen the north quay at the Freeport’s Terminal Two by 176 metres and the west quay by 195 metres, ensuring that the facility can handle new and future LNG-powered mega container ships that can carry 23,000 TEUs.

Following the completion of the project, the European port will renounce its right to install Quay Cranes on the West Quay at Terminal One.

The facility handles about 3 million TEUs each year, employs over 1,500 people directly and contributes US$188 million, translating to 2% of Malta’s gross domestic product (GDP), making it a vital pillar of the Maltese economy.
