May was a historic month for the Port of New York and New Jersey as it became the second busiest cargo month ever in its years of operation.
More specifically, total volume increased by 6.1% in May, reaching a total of 845,305 TEU compared to 796,693 TEU in the same month last year. This figure brings the port’s annual total container volume to 4,034,683 TEU.
From January to May, imported cargo at the port of New York and New Jersey reached 2,068,369 TEU, an increase of 11.5% compared to the same period in 2021, while exported cargo reached 554,480 TEU compared to 586,264 TEU in the same period of the previous year.
Meanwhile, rail volume in May remained steady from the previous year’s figure at the Port of New York and New Jersey with a total of 62,087 containers, an increase of 0.1%, while rail volume from January through May 2022 fell by 5.1% compared to the same period of 2021.
