Metrans acquires 51% stake in Croatian Adria Rail

Metrans, a rail subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), is expanding its network, especially to South-Eastern Europe.

Metrans purchased a 51% stake in Croatian Adria Rail, which is a rail transport business that offers train transportation solutions from the Adriatic region to Central and South-Eastern Europe.

Adria Rail also operates an inland terminal in the Serbian settlement of Indija, close to Belgrade. Metrans has opened its first station in Serbia thanks to its stake in Adria Rail.

Meanwhile, Metrans continues to expand in Hungary. In addition to the main station in Zalaegerszeg, which is already under construction, an extra terminal will be constructed in the Hungarian city of Szeged. Both inland terminals are expected to open in 2025.

This will enable Metrans to extend its European network to include 21 inland terminals at strategic locations.

“Countries in South-Eastern Europe are experiencing dynamic growth, therefore new logistics solutions are required,” stated Peter Kiss, CEO of the Metrans Group.

Metrans’ European network currently spreads from the North Sea and Baltic Sea to the Adriatic and Black Seas, and it is constantly expanding, while new links to Gdansk, Istanbul, and Constanța were created in 2022.
