Mexican container traffic slumps in H1 2020

Container traffic in Mexican ports declined by 11.1% in the first six months of the year as the country battled with the economic fallout of the global pandemic.

Total traffic in Mexican ports was down to 3.1 million TEU compared to 3.5 million TEU posted in the same period last year. Ports on the Gulf coast felt the brunt of the drop in volumes with a decline of 13.6% while volumes moving through Pacific coast ports shrank by 9.8%.

Mexico’s largest container gateway in Manzanillo saw its volumes fall by 7.2% to 1.4 million TEU in the six-month period, while the country’s second largest container port, Lazaro Cardenas, saw volumes slip by 20.9% to 523,589TEU.

Volumes in Veracruz were down 13.1% to 494,202TEU in the same period.
