Modern Terminals has announced its sustainability strategy to conduct operations aiming at the elimination of direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 and to become carbon neutral by 2050.
The strategy includes long-term goals for five sustainability pillars: Corporate Governance, People, Health and Safety, Environment, and Community Involvement, which provide a plan for the container terminal operator with facilities in Hong Kong and Western Shenzhen.
“We see that climate change is a big issue and believe it is important for Modern Terminals to take bold actions to help address the issue,” said Group Managing Director of Modern Terminals Limited, Horace LoOur who added that “our strategy sets the future path of our sustainability efforts so as to optimise the results and the positive impact we create.”
To achieve the decarbonisation goals, Modern Terminals will introduce renewable energy at its facilities and plans to electrify all container handling equipment and yard vehicles.
Furthermore, a total of 291 solar panels will be installed on the rooftop of Modern Terminals’ Warehouse Building, with an area of approximately 1,000m², with their installation expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year.
After its completion, the system will generate about 140,000 units (kilowatt-hour) of electricity each year and can help reduce 51,800 kg of carbon emission per annum.
Other long-term goals cover material topics including technology and automation, supply chain management, green finance, diversity and inclusion, health, safety and wellness for employees and contractor workers, and community engagement.
