MOL establishes EcoMOL towards decarbonisation

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced the establishment of EcoMOL, a wholly owned subsidiary that aims to increase ship’s operational efficiency through digital solutions.

MOL’s goal is to improve fuel efficiency by 5% by the end of 2024.

In the short term, improving the ship’s operational efficiency, including the ship’s ESD (energy sailing device) facilities, is the most efficient and realistic solution, according to MOL.

The Japanese shipping company, therefore, will support dynamic and innovative actions in daily operation, utilising a big data analysis and continuous evaluation of the actual performance of the operation.

EcoMOL, based in the Philippines, will play an important role in the success of these activities, collaborating with various stakeholders and being a leader in eco-operation of ships by any means.

MOL has set “green” goals both in the medium and long term.

More specifically, the company wants to reduce the intensity of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in marine transport by about 45% by 2035 (compared to 2019) and achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2050 with a coordinated effort across the group, through five initiatives including of enhancing operational efficiency in the “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.1”.

EcoMOL will play a key role in achieving these goals and contributing to a society of low carbon emissions, according to MOL’s statement.
