More lines implement Auckland congestion surcharges

Maersk Line and CMA CGM will apply a port congestion surcharge in the Port of Auckland due to heavy congestion in New Zealand’s major port. These surcharges are being applied after MSC’s announcement for Port of Auckland congestion surcharge.

CMA CGM has announced a port congestion surcharge of US$200/TEU (both standard & reefer containers) will be introduced for all containers arriving/departing Auckland with the following application dates:

Non US Trades:

  • Export cargo for all vessels departing Auckland on or after 17 November
  • Import cargo to Auckland for all vessels departing origin on or after 17 November

US Trades:

  • Export cargo for all vessels departing Auckland on or after 3 December
  • Import cargo to Auckland for all vessels received at origin on or after 3 December

The French carrier has informed customers that the payment will be via collect for imports and on a prepaid basis for exports.

Furthermore, Maersk will implement a port congestion surcharge of US$215/TEU (both standard and reefer containers) for all containers arriving to or departing from Port of Auckland, New Zealand, as follows:

Auckland to/from World (excluding US trades)

  • Export cargo for all vessels departing Auckland on or after 13 November 2020
  • Import cargo departing from origin on or after 13 November 2020

Auckland to/from US

  • Export cargo received in Auckland on or after 6 December 2020
  • Import cargo received at origin on or after 6 December 2020

The Auckland congestion surcharge will be applied for all cargo loaded/discharged at the Port of Auckland. The  surcharge will not be applied to cargo with receipt/delivery at Auckland Metroport.

The Auckland Congestion fee will be applied with following freight terms unless otherwise stipulated on the Shipping Instruction

  • Imports to Auckland from World: the Auckland port congestion surcharge will be applied on a freight collect basis
  • Exports from Auckland to World: the Auckland port congestion surcharge will be applied on a freight pre-paid basis.

The Danish container line has noted that the congestion at Ports of Auckland, New Zealand continues to cause significant disruption to its vessel schedules.

“Over the past weeks, we have done our utmost to deliver your cargo to and from Auckland while managing the current situation best possible. We are experiencing significant vessel delays with waiting times currently up to 12 days, resulting in vessel omissions and contingencies significantly impacting our overall operational costs,” Maersk commented in its announcement.
