MPS invests US$53 million in Tema box terminal equipment

Meridian Port Services (MPS) has signed a purchase agreement with Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company Limited (ZPMC) to equip its Terminal 3 in the Port of Tema with 15 new gantry cranes, including three ship-to-shore (STS) and 12 electrified rubber-tired gantry (eRTG) cranes.

This US$53.31 million investment is expected to enhance operations and capacity at the African terminal of MPS, a joint venture between Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) (30%), APM Terminals (35%) and Bolloré Transport and Logistics (35%).

Ghana’s Minister of Transport highlighted that the agreement represents a positive socio-economic impact and encouraged MPS to continue its work in providing the Port of Tema with new infrastructure and equipment.

The order of the additional 15 gantries was driven by the increase in container volumes in MPS’ Terminal 3, while it is currently equipped with 11 STS, two mobile harbour cranes and 29 eRTG yard cranes.

The agreement was signed on 18 January in a virtual signing ceremony with Mohamed Samara, CEO of MPS and Liu Cheng Yun, president of ZMPC, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, Ghana’s Minister of Transport, and the executives of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

“We will continue to work together to maintain this positive outcome and to monitor the development of the project in accordance with the master plan,” commented the managing director of GPHA, Michael Luguje.
