MSC will develop its intermodal network by opening a new modern Westdorpe terminal, which is accessible by barge, train and truck, to serve its customers in the region of Zeelandic Flanders.
[s2If is_user_logged_in()]The new terminal in Westdorpe, which is part of the municipality of Terneuzen, boasts a central location in Zeelandic Flanders’ agricultural and industrial region, close to the Dutch – Belgian border, is already operational, an MSC representative told Container News.
“With this 30,000m² terminal we unlock the Zeelandic Flanders area with direct barge and rail connections to MPET Antwerp, Europe’s biggest container terminal,” said MSC in its announcement. This is expected to help to reduce MSC customers’ carbon footprints and relieve the heavily congested Antwerp ring road, according to a statement.
MSC’s trimodal terminal will have a container handling capacity of 20,000TEU per year, and includes three rail connections to MPET per week, with a capacity of 60TEU per one-way departure, as well as daily barge connections to all major container terminals in Antwerp and Rotterdam.
In addition, Swagermakers, a trucking company, will assure the flexibility for first and last mile solutions, according to MSC. Furthermore, modern storage and bagging solutions will be available through the new terminal for sugar and fertiliser businesses.
